23 nov | Three nice pictures | Left to Right, the first is one of fishermen by an artist named Benton. The middle photo is of farrier Peter Yates, found in an older book entitled: Vermonters with photos by Jon Gilbert Fox, published by the Countryman Press in Woodstock, Vermont. The title may be out of print, but they do other books. The third is of Bruce some years back
Fishermen Peter Yates, farrier Under the Boardwalk
books-for-sale books-for-sale | I go through a vast assortment of reading material, and when done with it I am loathe to discard and dispose of it. So, in order to keep these things from going to waste, I've decided to compile a list of the books the attic can no longer store. And put them up for sale. Kind of a low-rent eBay site if you would.
Right now I've only got a sample page up to view. And I still have to figure out the postage and handling part of the equation. But just click on the book icon and you'll be able to see the beginnings of the book list.
Directions in the future | Dunno. I finally have someone else to work with me at the hospital. Eventually this personnel addition shall free up some time for me to do more creative endeavors.
  • I have committed to developing a new website that looks at ways of fostering better land stewardship, so that is in the works, but probably won't see general recognition until late January or early February.
  • Thumbnails for the male images pages would be nice, as well as a fresh update to the same.
  • I'm looking for someone who knows about Native American Medicine and Spiritual healing. There's someone I know who is especially interested in this and I'd like to see what can be done to faciliate a meeting, if possible, if all parties agree. E-mail me

ratical.org Raitcal.org | Whoo boy! Don't know how I missied this site until now. ratical.org offers an extensive listing of links, essays and ruminations on the dangers inherent in multinational corporate control of the world; thoughts on Gaia, the Iroquois 6 nations, the times in which we live, and "living life passionately." I can see clearly that there shall be a whole weeks worth of I-net viewing time that, rather than aimless surfing, I'll be wandering around this location. Heartening to see how dedicated a couple of people can be to creating and maintaining such a well crafted site. Incidentally, while it is not a "for pay" site, the site authors do welcome monetary contributions to keep their work going. Might be something worth considering for making a holiday donation.
Howard Pyle's 'Marooned' Pirates | Oh, this isn't related to anything in particular. It is Howard Pyle's Marooned, the original now safely ensconced in the Delaware Art Museum.
I came across a postcard copy of the image during that trip to the Outer Banks at a little gift shop/pirate "museum" in Ocracoke, NC. Ocracoke is a spit of an island on the Banks, and is reputedly the place where the infamous pirate Blackbeard made port.
Thanksgiving Day | Spent the better part of the day at work. Being at the hospital on a holiday is most certainly a more relaxed atmosphere. Since I was not able to leave my post, lunch was the same as the patients (and some other staff) get. Turkey, mashed potatoes, peas, squash and pumpkin pie. All served on a hefty creme and salmon-colored serving tray (portion control). Filling if not imaginative, but then again, the kitchen is making food for over 1,000 people who have to get fed in roughly an hour and a half.
Afterwards, it was home to stack wood and get ready for our annual Post Thanksgiving Victuals gathering which Bruce and I host the Friday afterwards. A covered dish finger foods gathering where the only rule is that people do not bring turkey or stuffing. One of the favorite dishes from China City (in Middletown, CT) and their hot sauce wontons. We're told it's a good time had by all.
For supper, we ended up at our favorite Indian restaurant, Taj (also in Middletown) chowing down on pourri, lamb saag, some kind of curried dish and tikka masala. Cooled it all down after with a cold rice dessert.
But while I talk of what it was I ate today, it ought to be clear that this day is -and ought to be- a day of reflection and meditation concerning that which I am thankful for during the entire year. A tall order to present all of that on this limited page space. More daunting still, the recollection of people who I have to thank is long as well ...and I would hate to leave anyone out.
But I have to say how thankful I was to have been able to have seen my brother twice in one year, and to have been able to have traveled as much as I have this year (San Diego, Florida, the Outer Banks, Maryland, the Bingham family campgrounds, Montreal and Ukiah CA, in particular). For these sojourns I have to thank Neil and David, Lindsay, my son Gareth & Wendy, to Peggy. Thanks, as well, to the folks at Haddam Cooperative Extension & Nature Conservancy, to Roy Moeckel, Tom Beherendt and to Lugnut, all of whom helped make them memorable. And, of course, to Bruce. I'm also thankful to have been introduced to Carmen, who has provided immeasurable support in such a short period of time.

    about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
