lane county sine wave 19 nov | More Mendocino memories | Here's a couple more images from the trip to norCal. The first was actually taken in Yolo or Calosa County (if my memory serves me right) and it was one of hose taken in an area where, actually, the absence of plant life had me captivated and entranced.
The second image, an old abandonded truck, was the first of several. This one is quite possibly one of the better ones in that the colors were a bit more vivid. That ...and the fact that it was too dark to capture the others using available light, are why this one ended up on the page and the others didn't. || This leg of the trip, where I saw the truck, was just before driving up through the steeply pitched canyon walls of Cache creek north of Rumsey another rust bucket (population 52) || Wish the light had been better, since the color palette was pretty astounding || Of course, this also teaches me to make sure to bring plenty of 800 ISO film when traveling; having the proper film exposure would have also helped.
I have earlier images of the Mendocino County trip up on the last nov 11 thru nov 17th for those who remain curious. A couple of other rolls of film have yet to be developed || When they get back, I'll create one of those travel pages such as the one I did after coming back from NYC last July.
Maya Lin The work of Maya Lin | While watching an interview of Maya Lin on C-SPAN, conducted by Brian Lamb I was struck by the breadth of work this relatively young sculptor/designer has completed already in her lifetime. Best known for the Vietnam Memorial and the Civil Rights Monument, her work is much more extensive than one might think. This is, in part, due to Ms. Lin's self effacing nature, and a reluctance to seek publicity for herself. An article on Ms. Lin from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Emerging from the Shadows supports these observations.
I was particularly impressed by the photos shown of the Langston Hughes Library, built within the frame of an ancient barn on Hughes' estate. But this is only one of many works by this important environmentally and socially invested creative soul.
In the online article Environmental Design by Marla Hochman, you can learn even more about this talented artist.

on the back porch Care and maintainance of foot gear | Nick's Custom Boots ("America's Boot Specialist since 1964") offers an assortment of tips on proper maintenance, the 2-1-3 method of lacing, and other curious boot care advice for "your lifestyle." Their prices are NOT cheap but they assert that they are good for "years of wear."
Advice for breaking a new pair:
Break-in takes roughly 80 to 100 hours of wear. It can take another week for your feet to adjust to the transition.
1.  Fill a spray bottle with a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol & water.
2.  Spray the mixture on the boots every time you feel them getting tight or stiff.
3.  While wet, friction-rub them with your hand as if your were polishing them. This allows the alcohol to penetrate.
4.  Lacing-It is important to lace the boot tightly over the instep and around the ankle , which allows the leather to seat properly. (Snug is good; snugger is better)

Then again, there's always the spit polish method.
An aside to David | So, have you figured out the answer to that question yet?

about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
