18 nov | Mendocino memories | This weekend seems to provide me so much to write about, so that if you are looking for the things I've put up about the Mendocino County trip you now have to click on to last archive file for the specifics. There shall be more coming which will no doubt be put on the current page.
Buy Nothing Day Buy Nothing Day | AdBusters/Culturejammers are at it again this Buying Holiday season to encourage us to not get caught up in consumerism and spending for the hell of it. Their website says the following of this endeavor:

OUR CONSUMER CULTURE IS OUT OF CONTROL. Once, we shopped to buy what we needed, period. Now that we don't need much, we shop for other reasons: to impress each other, to fill a void, to kill time. A mere 20% of the earth's population uses 80% of its natural resources. Our overconsumption is killing the planet.
BUY NOTHING DAY is a simple idea with deep implications. It forces us to think about the "shop-till-you-drop" imperative and its effects on the rest of the world. On Buy Nothing Day enjoy a break from the shopping frenzy. Relish your power as a consumer to change the economic environment.
BUY NOTHING DAY: NOVEMBER 24, 2000

While on the surface I would support this conceptually, as a visual artist, who can sometimes make extra money selling things around the holidays, my real feelings are mixed about actually boycotting purchasing items that are not considers, well, essential. And since creativity is often seen as suspect, I have problems giving this idea a whole hearted endorsement. Nevertheless, for more info on AdBusters suggestions on this, click on the Shopping cart logo above.
oops! a favorite soccer sight I love a good soccer match | Next to rugby, it is my own favorite as a spectator sport. The speed and grace of the players, action on the field, not at all like American football where he players lumber under heavy and cumbersome protective gear and hide themselves from risk. Unlike the blokes in this match, who bare all to get the game played out. But this image give me pause in order to raise the question, just what game is being played here? ...and why wasn't I invited?

Montana Fire Montana Fire | The subject has long passed in terms of immediacy. And when Dave D came from Colorado we got a through recount of what it was like to actually be in the region, with smoke and grit affecting the terrain and the air many miles away
Recently a friend send the following photo taking during the fires in Montana last summer and I found it particularly impressive. Wish I could give proper credit to the photographer. If Karen R could provide the name, I shall gladly credit the source.

about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
