wild turkey   1 sept | Turkey trot woes | The other day I learned that the home of a woman up the road from us was visited by a Tom Turkey while she was away. Somehow, and for reasons that we'll never know, this Tom flew up (about 10' above the ground) to a picture window facing the river, collided with the pane of glass and found himself inside the house, where he apparently spent the last days of his life running about the house searching for food and water. He wasn't discovered for a couple of days until two other ladies who live down the road in the other direction, stopped by the house and heard crashing and banging inside. Being cautious types, they called the resident troopers who saw the turkey flailing about in the house and who, in turn, called the game wardens to ask just what to do
Together the group broke into the house, and found what carnage a freaked out bird the size of a wild turkey can do when unwantedly confined. Certainly one set of things a wild confined turkey can do in a house is to shit and puke all over everything. The Environmental protection folks did kill the bird, and the aftermath of carnage included damage to a fine antique oriental rug (anybody know how to clean something like this? dried and caked as it is?) pictures and books destroyed and furniture ruined too. Not to mention what he did in the kitchen to try to get something to eat.
I don't really have a moral to this story, though I do wonder how the bird was able to see something in the window (some other phantom Tom horning in on his brood?) and marvel at his flight that high to attach the mirage.

27 aug | Work Rants | There've been a number of things that have been keeping me all het up at work. Lack of resources (computer, easy access to in-house e-mail, a telephone number of my own) that administrators who work above me would consider intolerable if they had to put up with the same.
But the most frustrating aspect that has me going is that I have recently been castigated because about 6 (of over 150) grievance left the hospital and went to the Comissioner's office as appeals. This, combined with the additional responsibilities of 10 more wards of patients who are to come to me if they have grievances about their stay at the facility.
That the criticisms come largely from suits who wouldn't know a patient by name if you paid 'em is all the more angering. My only consolation is that I know that such behaviors (on the part of administrators anywhere) are not atypical. Just wish they'd get a conscience, a soul, and get off their clouds.
Ah well vacation shall come up soon, can't wait!
dieting | I've been reluctant to say I am trying to diet. What I have been saying is that I'm watching what I eat more closely. Which is only partially true. I am eating less; I am drinking more water, eating more fruit, taking fewer second helpings. And I have been keeping a food diary. And in the first couple of months in doing all this I have lost over 20 pounds. But late July and most of August have just been static insofar as weight loss is concerned.

about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
