justin dart
26 july 02 | in memory of justin dart | On the 12th Anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act it seems apt to pay homage to Justin Dart // Renowned and beloved, human rights activist Justin Dart passed from this realm on 22 June 2002 // Credited for sheparding the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act through USA Congress (during Reagan and George Bush père's reigns, no less), and one of the few civilans to win the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Not long before he died, Justin spoke with David Oaks, founder of Dendron/Mind Freedom and Support Coalition International, and told him of the main course of action for acheiving social justice:
He told, "I know what people need to do to really win freedom." I listened intently.
"What is it Justin?" I asked.
He yelled, "Get off our asses and organize!"
And he is right! // There is NO adequate substitute for being organized against the opposition // My only direct connection to Justin came in large measure because of activism // On that occasion, I was honored and surprised to receive a brief letter of commendation and support (which had also been sent to rights activist and mental health law attorney Tom Beherendt) after the resounding defeat of a poorly written and onerous fored treatment (i.e. "outpatient committment") legislative proposal that had failed to pass in Connecticut // Justin used his personal wealth and resources to fight for people's human rights during most of his life //
He shall be greatly missed // For more detailed recollections of his life, see the Mind Freedom web pages about Justin Dart and the Justice For All website.

graffiti art | Anyway, last night after suddenly finding meself with too much free time, I drove halfway across the state [ note to BillP: The movie theatres in your old neighborhood are still open ] and dropped in unannounced on my friend Mike // Mike took me for a walk into the woods, along a railroad track, so I could "...see Graffiti Park..." // While there we ran into a couple of painters who discreetly come to the site through the woods, so as not to attract
connector from dasyne.com attention // the site, they say, is known to graffiti artists throughout the nation, and has apparently even been written up in a French arts magazine (because of some of the artists who have come to spray there) // Located on a superfund clean up site, the walls and concrete slabs that held up huge tanks of toxic waste now glow with creative vibrance // Worth the visit but I'm not telling how to get there // The images are ephemeral // works by asy, ges, foam, slice and totem (to name only a few) get painted over with fluid frequency // So next time I'll take the camera // In the meantime, the pix here can be found at dasyne.com // Works of other graffiti artists can also be found at artcrimes.com //
