A little Sunday Morning Reflection | Ahh! A slow steady rain, fresh coffee and African-Amercian gospel music [courtesy of WESU-FM] What a relaxing way to spend the day | It also gets me a chance to catch up on David Gwynne's trip to Seattle from San Francisco ...a photo tribute to neon signage, used bookstores, dive diners and funky commercial pop architecture | A relaxing cyber ride up north america's west coast |

censored perspectives | Tired of the CNN/CNBC/FOX media mistruths? Here's a site providing fresh perspective on the world | But for the Internet, these might be inaccessible |
  • autodafe | "the censored library" | In 1993, an international group of writers (including Salmon Rushdie, Russell Banks and many others) got togther to start a refuge against literary intolerance and censorship | eventually this led to the creation of this site in 2001 | According to Brit journalist Margaret Drabble, autodafe "...is full of interesting, well-written and alarming material, from writers all over the world, both famous and less famous. It offers a valuable [albeit a] disturbing report on the state of literary freedom and censorship at the beginning of the 21st century...
  • working for change | A website "...of resources for people with progressive values..." | With columnists the likes of Molly Ivens, Alexander Cockburn and Arianna Huffington, a reader is assured of reading something more substantial than what can be found on corporate media blog sites | Brought to you by Working Assets one of the older socially responsible investment funds.
Paula Rego's 'Deposition' Paula Rego | Portugese born, British as resident for a couple of decades now | She (as I) says she "...never understood why "illustration" is used dismissively in the art world. I mean Dore had to imagine these things. The power comes from the invention-the drama and variety of scale. What they really are is a series of Brilliantlly expressed phobias. To dismiss them because they are in a book is ridiculous.    It's that

stupid old "fine art" snobbery again..." | Her own illustrations, rich tapestries of the imagination, tell stories rather like the very real tapestries of medievil Europe | For those who maintain the artifice that storytelling as a visual medium is passé, I would suggest seek out Ms Rego's work before making that judgement | and if you do, you shall find that your assessment is incorrect | A current exhibition of her work is at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven, CT. The site doesn't do her work justice | Only seeing it in person does. So if you can't make it to that show, seek her work out elsewhere |
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT | CIA Psychiatrist | This little 'blurb may give one pause. The CIA is actively soliciting for a psychiatrist "...to evaluate information and provide sophisticated analysis for senior policymakers. Positions require significant expertise in the interpretation of medical or psychiatric data, ability to communicate sophisticated medical or psychiatric concepts to a lay audience, and computer literacy..."
Could there possibly be any connection to the Bush/Cheny/American Enterprise Institute efforts to get extremist pro forced treatment (and opponent of mental health consumer self-help iniatives) Sally Satel? | Support Coalition International does not make that connection but there are enough other connections (including the CIA's own George H W Bush Center for Intelligence [sounds like an oxymoron if I ever heard one] that it renders one suspicious \ Chilling!

PBS panel to discuss John NashYeah, tonight! On USA Public Broadcasting |PBS assures its audience that the show's presentation shall be balanced | PBS is inviting people to e-mail in questions | You can submit them now: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/nash/sfeature/sf_forum.html
gambling additcions conference in las vegas
Unclear on the concept: problem gambling in las vegas | Harvard Medical School's Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling is holding a 3 day conference on dealing with addictions at none other that the Mirage Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada | Is this looking for customers or what?
The question is just what kind of business is being sought out? Harvard's gaming think tank, which purports to "... alleviate the individual, social, medical and economic burdens caused by pathological gambling through support of rigorous scientific research..." is able to pursue that ivory tower research thanks to generous grants from the National Center for Responsible Gaming [NCRG]. And who might that be?
Quite simply, the heads and honchos from the gaming industry themselves. NCRG's Board of Directors includes CEOs of several gambling casino complexes, representatives from Nevada and Missouri Gaming Commissions, and they dovetail their interests with treatment providers. No conflict of interest there, eh?
    land preservation victory! |
20 years in the making! Read about the US Supreme Court decision regarding thoughtful community planning against greedy land speculators.TAHOE-SIERRA PRESERVATION COUNCIL, INC. v. TAHOE REG'L PLANNING AGENCY, the US Supreme Court has ruled, with a clear majority, that developers don't have unfettered ability to do what they feel like doing when they please on lands to which they currently hold title | You'll need Adobe Acrobat to read it.
