17 november 02 | found magazine | Amina Lawal's Story | election mop up

Have you ever come across a lost scrap of paper that doesn't make much sense but ~ still and all ~ suggests a broader description of events is warranted? | FOUND magazine is just that | The layman's cultural anthropologist, as it were | 'Thwarted' from FOUND magazine According the the 'zine's website ... we collect FOUND stuff: love letters, birthday cards, kids' homework, to-do lists, ticket stubs, poetry on napkins, telephone bills, doodles- anything that gives a glimpse into someone else's life. anything goes... | The premise of this site is to display found notes, pictures, or objects, and to ponder the people who left them behind |

 <-- a sample from FOUND | ©2002 / Davy Rothbert

Davy Rothbart, the publisher of the magazine Found, says he [and a growing coiterie of interested cultural scavangers] checks everywhere ~ from trash cans in back of Kinko's, to coffee house countertops, on street corners, buses, even schoolyards to gather material for the somewhat irregularly produced periodical | Of late, this little gem has gotten write ups in UTNE Reader, US NEWS and World Report, even Penthouse | ..and now, even here | Check it out, but watch where you throw your unwanted artifacts away |

Amina Lawal's Story | It kind of doesn't matter where she's from, what her religion is, or anything much more than what she did and the punishment to which she has been consigned | She had a child out of wedlock | For this, a fundamentalist Islamic judical court has sentenced her to death by stoning | The father, whose identity is known, shall go without such a similar fate | Indeed, he may get to raise his own child, suffering no adverese effects, since he's an unexpected beneficiary in a society and culture that exploits and oppresses women using some twisted [and surely out of context] interpretation of some part of the Qu'ran |
This woman's fate was recently highlighted on the Ophra Winfrey Show, which also has a webpage from which you can write to Amnesty International and the Nigerian Government to try and halt this act of cruelty and barbarism | That site, Amina's Story can provide you with more details and background on this case |

dollar sign election mop up ...where nothing's swept clean | I'd be the last to say this was an example of a "new brush sweeping clean" ~ more like the dirty old brush getting ready to apply the tar, but time shall tell on that one, eh? | Heard a couple of wags muttering in a local beer hall about learning a foreign language, or musing on what interrment camps are gonna be like as well as some headier, possibly more seditious stuff | Sobering for me | Though with the national Democratic party having striven for the past few years to be good Republicans themselves, is it any surprise people felt there wasn't much of a choice ? I think not | Now while it seems to be a matter of watching what this action brings us, we cannot be passive | Silence serves no useful purpose now |
The Grand Old Party has finally acheived what they want ~ to be in power | They shall be accountable for their leadership ~ if not to us, then most certainly to history | In the meantime, work toward positive social change by example | If it all falls apart, somebody's got to be around to really clean up the mess |
