"When I give to the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why the poor have no food, they call me a communist." -- Dom Helder Camara

04-07-01 || Getting from Global Feudalism to Economic Democracy:
Anup Shah, cites a book, Economic Democracy: The Political Struggle Of The 21st Century,in one of his recent site entries, reprinting the text of a advert for a book because he felt it's material so compelling.
Global corporate economic feudalism and the grossly unequal distribution of wealth get once again cited as the real causes of poverty being that of (no surprise, really). The text may be, for some, a bit dense and academic in tone. But the premises are sound.
The book is published by the Institute of Ecomonic Democracy [I'd wager they don't get any of the various Scaife Foundation monies] and available via IED's website, itself a wealth of essays on global economic feudalism. IED's site is also danged useful in providing links on progressive issues and resources. Kind a dull visually, but this doesn't hold me back. Neither should it you.
A little "horn tooting" When this site first came online, it took almost 15 months for me to break 10,000 hits to the site. In the past three months, this site's (or different sections of it) visits have spiked a bit. Used to be it would take 4 months to break that ceiling. Since then it has gone up to about 10,000 hits each month, with a average of 350 hits per day, higher on the weekends. So it's become a leisure pursuit, not bad, eh? Thanks viewers
Spirituality as a Source of Healing | (this is directly from an e-mail message) Have you used spiritual and/or holistic healing practices that had a positive effect on your psychiatric condition?

The Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation at Boston University is conducting a study to identify holistic and spiritual practices that benefit persons with disabling psychiatric conditions. If you have a psychiatric condition and your mental health has improved through the use of any holistic and/or spiritual practices, you have valuable knowledge that may help many other people with psychiatric conditions.
If you can answer "yes" to the three questions below, we invite you to participate in this study. As a participant, you will be asked to complete a written questionnaire and will be compensated $10 for your time. We estimate that it will take approximately 45 minutes to complete this questionnaire.
If you can answer "YES" to the following questions, we invite you to participate in this groundbreaking study:

  • As an adult, have you experienced a disabling psychiatric condition?
  • Have you used holistic and/or spiritual practices for your psychiatric condition?
  • Have any of these practices had a positive effect on your mental health?

All the information you give us will be completely confidential. No names will be used in any report that is written about this study.

Why participate? | You are in a unique position to be able to help other people with psychiatric conditions. From your personal experience, you know about holistic and spiritual practices that might be beneficial to many others with disabling psychiatric conditions. Because different people have different experiences, it is important for us to get information from as many people as possible. You have information or experiences that we might not hear about from anyone else. Your participation is important! Please contact us.
If you are willing to participate in this study, please contact us to enroll in the study. Call us collect at 617/353-3549, leave a voicemail at 617/353-1113, send an e-mail to zlatka@bu.edu, or send us a note at the address below. We look forward to having you join our study.

04-06-01 || Getting out the VOTE
Vote.com has become a fairly prominent informal survey tool. Certainly unscientific (they rely on the folks who happen upon their site to take part in the surveys) they nevertheless forward your letters to congressional representatives and the USA President's office for review. Vote.com      Unfortunately, the perspectives the website presents are not infrequently biased and often the "counts" heavily weighted to the apparent perspectives of those operating the site.
For those of you who know my own biases, this site is usually weighted against the causes I espouse. The site's take on things is generally pro-megacorporate rule and also anti-gay (e.g. "should gays and lesbians be granted special rights by being included in hate crimes legislation?).
Yet the site is still reliant on coming up with findings depending upon who actually takes part in the polling questions they present. And it seems to me that giving the site a better balance is in order. SO go there and take part in a couple of survey questions once in awhile.
One warning: for folks with slow modem connections, the site's main page takes some time to upload; Make sure you have a simple game or something else to read in the meantime.
    04-05-01 || Connecticut sportsmen website
Mal Luber's 'Here Comes The Judge' I'm not sure how it has been that I didn't come across this site before, but now that I've found it I'm leting you know about it. The following text speaks for itself:

The Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen is the only state sportsmen’s organization singularly dedicated to the protection, promotion and preservation of hunting, fishing, trapping and the scientific wildlife management programs which support them; Right to Keep and Bear Arms Constitutional provisions; Boating; Land use; and other sportsmen associated issues through legislative lobbying, legal defense in the courts, and political action. No other state sportsmen organization has as its sole purpose these activities. The Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen takes pride in its unsurpassed achievement and service to all of the Connecticut sportsmen’s community.

The success of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen hinges upon each sportsmen’s personal involvement and active participation in the Legislative process. You can help CCS meet its goals by becoming concerned, active, and vocal; volunteering your time, energy, and resources to improve the laws and regulations affecting our activities; and by encouraging others to do the same.

For fellow sportsmen, the site is well worth the visit. Pleasing to look at, easy to navigate, and full of useful resource information.
Mal Luber's 'Moe' Mal Luber's 'Pitchin' Hay' Mal Luber and his work | In addition to the above site's (to me) useful material, the main page is highlighted with the works of this gent | Those of you famliar with my own interests shall have little difficulty discerning what I find appealing about this body of work.
Luber's collection of work is much acclaimed. Critics have said he has the "eye of a camera" when working with his subject matter. Past work has focused on portraits of street people and weightlifters; more recntly he has been working on a series of art depicting cowboys and the American West. | Go have a look for yourself
More Music Trivia | Okay. Here's the reason for this. I've finally been broken down. 'Cuz somebody kept asking me what music fills my head, over and over again. Not unlike how I listen to music. I'll play the same tape over and over again, sometimes for weeks, stopping eventually not 'cuz I've gotten tired of it but 'cuz some other item finally caught my ear. So here's some old "slang book"¹ stuff

Favorite musicans, tapes and CD's (in no particular order)
  • Simple Minds Real Life
  • DePeche Mode's Songs of Faith and Devotion
  • Jon Serre's Ixlandia
  • Joni Mitchell Hissing of Summer Lawns
  • Steely Dan Aja
  • Diana Krall When I Look in Your Eyes
  • Talking Heads Return to Light
  • City Boy Heads Are Rolling
  • The Dynamic Clark Sisters Is My Living in Vain
  • Dr John's Night Tripper (anybody seen a copy of this recently?)
  • ZZ Top's Greatest Hits
  • Mr. Mister Go On
  • Keith Jarret's Köln Concerts
  • Paul Winter's Common Ground
  • Dave Brubeck's Time Out (first jazz album I ever heard)
  • Music from Penguin Cafe
  • and any Mozart, Gershwin, Satté or Rachmaninoff

¹ RE: SLANG BOOKS: When I was in high school, kids used to create "Slang books" and pass 'em around between one another. Usually made in a black & white mottled cover Composition book, -more ambitious types would do 'em in loose leaf binders- each page would have a question at the top asking the viewer to add his or her "fave" response to the question. Cars, songs, hangouts, meanest teachers, cutest guys..., you get the picture. Kind of like some web page's entire content.

    02-3-01 || Work clothes

    Carhartt Carhartt logo
Workclothes | Since last November it seems I've gone on a new clothing buying binge. Not that this was unnecessary. For ~as the saying goes~ "...women gain weight and men's clothes Wearguard shrink..." [am I gonna catch hell for that one?] Now, the "binge" tends toward the functional; work clothes mostly, but with an ey toward what I could wear at some formal Dickies function with Suits at the event. I'm thinking of setting up a page for a lot of these mfgrs however, which folks could link to if they wanted to purchase the stuff.

    about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago. The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal, at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments, suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
