09-11-01 ||World Trade Center destroyed It really doesn't matter what the rationale behind the destruction of these twin landmarks might be for those who planned and perpetrated this action, the effects and the level of destruction was inconscionable. The number of people killed in the process, and in the destruction itself, the sheer monumentality of the impact. Such is the realm of a nautral disaster or an act of the Creator. That a handful of individuals elected to serve in the role of forces generally beyond the control of most humans, is despciable. I've got real concerns about who they are, and on how the pursuit of such is conducted, but the specifics of this will certainly fall out in the coming months and years. Right now it is more important to find out what people who remain alive in the rubble can be saved, and to provide solace and support for those who have lost persons close to them. The perprs may have been trying to make a point; perhaps they were critical and/or jealous of the wealth and power that the United States, its govermnet, and the financial institutions represents. Perhaps they had some other message they thought was "moral" to dispense. But none of what they wanted to convey matters, because of the wanton act of destruction and terror they have personally wreaked. There has got to be a special place in hell for the perpetrators for what they did.
These other pictures are from happier days. I'd taken them slightly over a year ago when my
brother and his then newly betrothed came to visit the east coast.
We had a wonderful day that included a
trip to Ellis Island and, fondly, a trip to the top of the observation deck of the south tower.
There is nothing to compare in our experience, short of traversing up
some mountain in the wilderness; and we'd done it with considerably less effort. The views were astounding and clear. We could see well into the Atlantic Ocean, west into New Jersey and far north of New York City.
People from all parts of the world were on the top of the tower that
day; it was not a phenomenon that was just for Americans, nor was it for the powerful.
The experience was there for all and everyone.
Sadly now all that is lost. But this loss is still insignificant when contratsed to the loss of possibly 20,000 souls who were doing nothing other than engaging in their ordinary daily routines. The perpetrators committed a massive War Crime against all of humanity, not just the United States or the rich and powerful. And that we cannot forget. |

about "Short Notes"
"Short Notes" was the title of a column I wrote while
working for a newspaper in the Adirondack Mountains some years ago.
The format was similar to what you'll find here, except augmented
with pictures and maps. The subject matter shall sometimes be personal,
at other times comments on events or situations of which I am aware. Comments,
suggestions welcomed but not always acted upon.
